COOKIES AND CAKES
To transfer the design onto an edible surface, you can use Royal Icing or colored piping gel. (You can achieve this consistency by adding a small amount of Tylose to plain cake gel.) If you have an airbrush compressor, you can quickly transfer the designs using a spray gun filled with color. Make sure that all colors used are water-based.
POLYMER CLAY
You can transfer the designs onto polymer clay using acrylic paint and a silicone spatula suitable for spreading, or even an old credit card.
LEATHER-HARD OR RAW CERAMIC CLAY
When applying the stencil, dampen it with a wet sponge and secure it onto the clay. Then apply your underglaze over the stencil using a brush.
BISQUE CERAMICS
When applying designs to mugs at the bisque stage, the underglaze may need to be thickened, depending on the paint brand. For this purpose, you can use Mayco Silk Screen Medium powder or the Silk Screen Medium CMC paint thickener powder available on our website (item code: DRX24).
♥ INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE ♥
This product is designed for long-term use and can be washed, dried, and reused many times. Clean the stencils gently with a soapy sponge without crumpling them, then leave them to dry on a flat surface.
The steps for using the stencil on BISQUE CERAMICS are as follows:
- Our Mesh Stencils are not self-adhesive. Therefore, secure them to the surface using masking tape.
- If our underglaze is too runny, add a small pinch of CMC powder to achieve a paste-like consistency. The ideal consistency should resemble toothpaste or honey. The viscosity of each paint varies from color to color and from brand to brand. For example, you may not need to thicken Mayco’s Stroke&Coat range. Paints that have been exposed to air and have already lost some of their water may also not require additional CMC powder.
- Once the paint has reached the right consistency, take a small amount on your fingertip and spread it over the mesh onto the mug while holding the stencil in place with your other hand. Occasionally lift an edge slightly to check whether the paint is transferring evenly.
- Once the entire surface has been covered, peel the mesh away from the mug.
- Depending on the shape of the mug, particularly if it is very rounded or has an awkward shape, the design may not transfer clearly in some areas. In such cases, you can touch up the design with a brush. If a large area needs correcting, remove the design in that area with a wet sponge and reapply the paint through the corresponding section of the mesh stencil.
- Once the painting is complete, place the mesh stencil in a container filled with water and remove any remaining paint with a sponge. If you are working on a production run, sandwich the mesh between paper towels to dry it quickly and move on to the next piece.
- Because the stencil is washable, it is designed for LONG-TERM USE. Simply wash, dry, and reuse it again and again.
TIPS & TRICKS

The most crucial part of this process is the consistency of the paint. Therefore, adding CMC powder is generally a step you should not skip. The paint must be thick enough not to run underneath the mesh, yet fluid enough to pass through it. Be patient and experiment a few times until you achieve a toothpaste-like consistency. With a little practice, you will find the right consistency.

Another frequently asked question is whether an intermediate firing is necessary. If you are confident that your underglaze and clear glaze are compatible, an intermediate firing is not necessary. Simply make sure the paint has dried thoroughly after decorating the bisque piece before dipping it into the glaze.

When is an intermediate firing necessary? Imported underglazes and locally produced glazes may have compatibility issues. In such cases, the glaze may not adhere properly over the underglaze design. The design may smear when the piece is dipped into the glaze, and the glaze may even flake off after firing. To help prevent these issues, you can carry out an intermediate firing.

Instead of dipping your mesh-decorated pieces into glaze, you can apply the glaze with a brush to help preserve the sharpness of the designs.

Trying to source your underglazes and clear glazes from the same supplier can also help prevent these issues.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR POLYMER CLAY
- Firm silicone spatulas always provide better results when working with polymer clay.
- Always move the spatula in a single direction at a 45-degree angle to scrape away excess paint.
- Both sides of your mesh stencil can be used. However, placing the matte side against the clay will help you achieve a sharper print.
- Immediately after applying the paint, place the mesh stencil in a container of water and use your fingertips to loosen the paint so that it releases into the water. Then, as quickly as possible, rinse the painted areas under running water. Acrylic paint can easily be removed from the stencil using a soapy sponge.
- Make sure the acrylic paint you use is water-based. Paints with different properties, or mesh stencils that are not immersed in water and washed immediately after use, may cause the mesh openings to become clogged.
- Paint viscosity can vary between brands, colors, and even between winter and summer. Choose water-based acrylic paints that are neither too runny nor too thick.
- Always keep the lids on your paint containers closed to prevent the water inside from evaporating.
